If your mother is vaccinated and you are vaccinated there is negligible risk of coming down with COVID. Denying a visit with your mother has nothing to due with the virus. Maybe laziness or some other nefarious reason?

I dunno. Here in LA… I tried to bring two colleagues onto a shoot last week only to learn they both had covid.

They got it on another shoot the week before.

One is in his 20s. The other 30s.

    Both were vaccinated.

    It’s given me REAL pause.

Are they very sick? Or just mild.

The three or four people I know who have had breakthrough cases have been pretty sick-laid up with fever for a week, but not hospitalized. I think authorities throw out “mild” descriptors for vaccine breakthroughs without caveating that “mild” in terms of COVID outcome is anything where your oxygen saturation doesn’t fall and you don’t go to the hospital.

One never showed any symptoms, but confirmed positive by multiple tests. The other had crazy bad sinus issues and felt all around awful… but was never hospitalized. He also had that whole loss of taste thing. He is now feeling much better. He is 24.

But yeah. It gave me real pause.

@Oracle: Both my mom and I are fully vaccinated. However, apparently some of the staff at the facility are not!!! Hence, the repeated need to be on “breakout” mode. If you work in a health care setting, it should be a condition of employment that you get vaccinated if you are able.

My mom is there for PT after a car accident and is leaving next month, but there are other very fragile folks who live there who really don’t have that option. My mom does have a couple of underlying conditions, though, and now she’s terrified she’s going to get it, which isn’t helpful for her recovery.

And —- I think I just saw them pulling a incredibly ill covid patient out of a LA bungalow on my morning walk.

We are, based on current growth rates, going to be at about 200-300 cases a day when the kids go back in September.

Yeah, even if infections in fully vaccinated individuals isn’t exactly common, some people do get pretty sick and you can still end up a long hauler. A podcast I listen to says that breakthrough infections are more frequent than anyone was anticipating (though odds are still low). For a chunk of this summer, I’ve had a mask with me just about everywhere but haven’t always worn it. With everything going on and cases on the rise, I’m back to wearing mine in indoor situations again even where not required. I believe as of yesterday, my city/county is back to “recommending” masks, but to my knowledge, no new mask mandates.
