Where I am in Canada, our government goes to great lengths to not share information about COVID. I had a test yesterday and was not even asked if I’d been vaccinated. I asked about it and they said they aren’t allowed to ask. In Ontario, they do collect and share data that breaks down # of cases, # of those unvaccinated, with one shot and with both. Scarily, about 16% of cases have been in people with both shots. They aren’t anywhere near as likely to be hospitalized or die as the unvaccinated but can spread it to the unvaccinated (like their kids!). I was in a restaurant a week ago that seemed like it might be ok at first but I was not pleased to see no servers in masks. Still, it was nearly empty, the windows were open and my whole family is fully vaccinated so I stayed. By the time the meal was halfway eaten, I looked up to a crammed room where everyone acted like it was 2019. Some were kids so clearly not everyone was fully vaccinated – and breakthrough numbers are higher than people realize.

    Everything is such shit.

And its all only going to get worse. And worse. And worse.

YES!!! Indoor mask mandate back in Chicago. I’ve been waiting for this since the day they took it off the table.

I’m also very glad Chicago will be mandating masks again. I wouldn’t mind at all if we did what SF is doing and requiring proof of vaccination for indoor activities and large-scale outdoor events. People might be more inclined to get vaccinated if life gets harder for them and they are excluded from parts of society that they do not want to be excluded from.

Had to go to a few pharmacies before I was able to find some at-home COVID kits. Seems they’re selling out fast around here. Perhaps these are the new hot item to hoard. I bought two. I want to have some around but also didn’t want to take too many. I’m trying to figure out some kind of game plan for at-home monitoring. IDK if I tested negative because I tested too soon, because I don’t have it, or what.

Shitstain Abbott who is vaccinated went and got monoclonal antibody treatment. Who’s scared of COVID? Treatment for me, not for thee.

In a display of using evil for good – a school district in Texas has amended their dress code to include masks. Masks are mandatory along with what I assume are bans on short skirts and shirts that show bra straps for girls and hopefully bans on clothing that shows boys’ armpits.

Anonymous, so sorry about the shingles again! How awful! Now you’ve inspired me to do what I can to get the vaccine, even if it means paying out of pocket (which I think it does if you’re under 50 and why I hadn’t pursued this before. I thought having had it already, I might not be at such risk for getting it again before getting vaccinated).I hope you recover quickly!

Copa, if it makes you feel any better at all, I have two friends who recently – in the last two weeks – had family they live with have covid and neither got it from them. One friend’s son and husband both got covid (breakthrough case for the husband. they think the son, too young for vaccination, brought it home from camp. Husband is a recent cancer survivor so may have more compromised immunity). My friend slept in a separate room, used a separate bathroom, everyone wore masks like you guys are doing and she managed to avoid getting it. My other friend’s daughter got covid at camp and no one else in the family got it from her, despite doing no distancing or masks at home. Even the brother who is unvaccinated managed to continue testing negative, which makes me think he must have had an asymptomatic case at some point and has some antibodies. Anyway, wishing you continued good health and hope your bf recovers soon!

I had a basal cell tumor removed yesterday and it was… unpleasant, but at least it’s done. It was on my forehead and the dr had to pull the skin really tightly to suture and now I have a terrible tension headache, which he said may last for a few days. There were four other patients in the waiting room all there for the same procedure and I was the. youngest by about 30 years (44 is pretty young to have skin cancer already). None of these oldies were wearing masks, despite signs saying they were required. I guess if you’ve got your protection and don’t have unvaccinated kids at home to worry about, who cares? Pissed me off.

    Sorry about the shingles!

Re the shot, my husband was given it last year because he’d turned 50 and I had him go in to get a full workup out of concern for cardio issues that some friends of his who do the same sport had been experiencing. We did pay out of pocket for some of it, but not that much considering everything he had done, and I don’t recall the shingles shot being a line item.

He got the flu shot at the same time and did feel like shit for a few days, but was up and around.

Oh ok, I didn’t realize it’s free if you’re over 50. Still, seems worth paying for.

Thanks for the well wishes, everybody. Thanks for the recommendations, Copa. I started the Guncle a few weeks ago but I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll try it again. I did watch some Modern Love yesterday and it was good, so thank you.

I felt so down about being sick yesterday. I was feeling so much better, or so I thought! I don’t think my life is that stressful, even with the trauma work I’m doing. So that’s really frustrating for me. I feel like I was doing so good and now I feel like I’m back in the dregs of January.

I truly, truly hope we all get some kind of normalcy soon. This is getting old.

On the advice of a pharmacist friend who said I should test again 3-5 days out from my boyfriend’s first day of symptoms in case it was too early, I took another test this a.m. Still negative. A different pharmacist that I talked to when I bought the at-home kits said that if I test negative on day 10, I’m in the clear.

I’m sorry about the shingles anonymousse. The last tv show I loved was Schitt’s Creek.

I think Canada is going to introduce booster shots for those immunocompromised (eg those going through chemo). My fiancé is taking medication that suppresses his immune system. Reading about your friend’s husband I realize that he could have breakthrough case too. Hopefully not.

Re: boosters. My dad volunteered for clinical trials so he found out in early January that he’d actually been vaccinated in October as part of those trials. Since we’re now wondering just how long that protection lasts, I texted him yesterday to ask if he could get a booster shot. He’s late 60s and creeping up on a year since his vaccination shots. Turns out he received a call about a booster yesterday, which is a relief to me. I hope he can get one before my grandma’s funeral.

I suspect the boyfriend is feeling pretty lousy today. It’s 10:45 and I haven’t heard him yet today (he felt meh the past two days and watched quite a bit of Netflix).
