That is infuriating. With Thanksgiving right around the corner this is just “Contagion 101”. Kid gets exposed, shows no signs, but isn’t quarantined. Parents and kids go visit Auntie Emmie along with all the family old and young. Everyone goes home with leftovers and few go home with a little extra surprise!
And in December… boof all the ICUs are full again.
I remain fine with my decision to not travel for Thanksgiving.
November 10, 2021 at 9:02 am #1099935So sorry to read this, and I saw in your stories, too, Wendy. I truly do not understand how I was contacted with our possible exposure. Luckily, my kids were negative last week. Which I’m most excited about because they are getting their shots this weekend!
I think I’ve shared some of my personal medical issues. Guess what, gang? Mono again. I’ve had shingles AND mono twice this year. Apparently, it’s also a virus that lies dormant and can reactivate in your body. I feel like I should be studied. I now have liver damage from all this crap. So viruses…getting them and getting well doesn’t always mean it’s all over. Be careful out there.
LisforLeslieNovember 10, 2021 at 10:23 am #1099936@anonymousse – that’s exactly the point. The flu is once and done. Chickenpox… turns into shingles. HPV… some get rid of it, some have it everlasting. Herpes… outbreaks. We think this is once and done… but we don’t know.
All the smart people have been saying “We don’t know what the future looks like for COVID.” because we don’t know. Some people seem to be once and done. Other people have long COVID. Other people have long term damage from the effects of COVID. Kidney issues, lung damage, I saw one guy had something called compartmenting and the skin on his legs has just up and died.
November 10, 2021 at 10:30 am #1099937Omg, anonymous, I’m so sorry! Both shingles and mono suck. I hope this is a mild case, at least. Terrible about the liver damage.
Leslie, you are totally right about Thanksgiving. There will be another holiday wave, and the unvaccinated or vulnerable folks who haven’t gotten boosters are not going to fare well. And as you point out, we have no idea what the longterm effects are. That’s been my biggest worry with my kids.
November 10, 2021 at 10:33 am #1099938I know, I was just putting that out there for the people who still think their kid can get it, be mildly sick and then go on their merry way.
November 10, 2021 at 10:43 am #1099939I keep wondering also about the millions (probably?) that have had Covid and not had any symptoms. Have we all mostly had it by now? It’s interesting/terrifying to think about as we get closer to the two year anniversary.
BTW: a few posts above I meant our school didn’t contact me when my son’s cubby mate and bus seat mate (same kid) tested positive.
VathenaNovember 10, 2021 at 11:13 am #1099941Ugh, anonymousse, I hope you feel better soon. That is great news that your kids tested negative! Wendy, I hope your kids stay healthy as well. We are so close – I have a bit more ease after the first shot but won’t be able to stop worrying until about 5 weeks from now…
So far, there have been only 2 reported cases at my daughter’s school this year – I really appreciate the district’s transparency and the precautions that have been taken (emails when positive cases are reported in school, contact tracing, weekly covid dashboard updates with numbers across the district, universal mask mandate, vaccine mandate for teachers and staff, daily symptom screener, daily temperature checks, weekly asymptomatic testing for 30% of students, lunches outside at least a few times a week when weather permits). It’s not perfect, but they are trying. Of course, then there’s dumb stuff like my daughter opting not to eat lunch outside yesterday, because she doesn’t like that there are ants, so she did a “lunch bunch” in the guidance counselor’s office. 5 other kids that are not part of her lunch cohort! Facepalm! I am flummoxed that the “lunch bunch” is even occurring right now – that seems like a real lapse in judgment. I hope the windows were open at least. I delivered a lecture and forbid her to do it again until after her second vaccine dose. Tomorrow is a day off for parent-teacher conferences, and they sent a surprise text last month that the kids will have the whole week of Thanksgiving off (fun surprise for families without childcare!!) so by my count that’s 9 more school days until her appointment for the next shot on the 30th…
BittergaymarkNovember 10, 2021 at 11:19 am #1099942My young nephew has Covid19. Seems to be a mild case. Symptoms over. But still quarantined. And testing positive. I am trying to stay calm about it.
Been a stressful week.
Utah went well. But a wonderful young woman (of only 32!) that I worked with on over half a dozen films was killed Saturday evening in a horrific motorcycle crash. (I wish I hadn’t read the actual news story.) Sigh… You can get pretty tight on film sets. And we were on location for several, too. So yeah, we were a close little group. Anyway, very unsettling and thoroughly depressing.
It’s never somebody I don’t like. Never.
LisforLeslieNovember 10, 2021 at 11:28 am #1099943@BGM – that sucks. You have my sympathy.
@Anonymousse – I guarantee there are large swaths of people who have not had COVID.November 10, 2021 at 12:15 pm #1099946I’m sure there are, it’s just interesting to think about all the things we still don’t know.
November 10, 2021 at 12:52 pm #1099948Sorry about your friend, BGM. That’s terrible.
