Fyodor —
I think that’s one reason. I think many police, and the police as a whole are very pro-Trump, think these actions show support for their president. I think there has been a collective impact of training programs which stress police self-protection and almost get-them-before-they-get-you. They also have to be feeling frustrated and fatigued at this point. There are bad cops who are attracted to policing as a way to exhibit power and who are prone to violence. Just as protesters can turn violent if a few in the group instigate violence/looting and adopt a mob mentality, so can the police. The Democratic convention in Chicago erupted into riots, which the after-studies deemed a police riot. That was egged on by mayor Daley. Certainly President Trump has been pouring gasoline on the fire, accusing mayors, governors, and by implication police, of being weak in their response to the protests, the vast majority of which have been peaceful, with police doing their best to incite violence. Trump is behind in the election. He and his supporters are trying to stir up white fear. Where the police have been restrained, the protest demonstrations have been peaceful. Trump’s walk to the church was a perfect example of turning a peaceful demonstration into violence through government attacking the crowd. That doesn’t happen by accident. It is part of president Trump’s self-branding as the white hero/savior/tough guy, despite the bone spurs.Ok, this woman explains the looting situation just a litttttle bit better than I can.

Here’s what she’s referring to:

No, I can’t buy her justification for looting. It sets back the movement, allowing people to overlook the message of the protests. The rioters also set back the cause. Together, they leave burnt out neighborhoods, which will suffer for a decade and convince bigoted whites that they were right all along. We’ve been down this road before and it didn’t work. Nonviolent protest works. Voting the bums out works. She’s not justifying it, Ron, wow. She’s giving an absolutely legitimate reason why a relatively few people might be doing this. Absolutely no one is saying rioting or looting “works.” I don’t know where you’re getting that. I know you’re fairly liberal and enlightened, but you were one of the strongest voices on here insisting that Trump voters aren’t racist, just economically insecure.
Wow. I seriously do not understand how you could watch that woman’s video and come out of it with the message, “she’s saying looting is an effective means of protest.”
FyodorJune 7, 2020 at 9:45 am #888084Rioting works or at least sometimes. I wish people wouldn’t do it, but whatever reforms are coming out of this moment aren’t coming from respectful persuasion but out of fear of major social unrest. We like the idea that virtuous and reasonable behavior changes minds and hearts but I don’t think that it’s how reality lines up.
Right, you know who likes it the most for people to be calm and stay in their lane? White men.
Meanwhile they’re the ones brutalizing, raping, murdering, lynching, and burning down people’s property. But ohhh noooo when some tiny percentage of a marginalized group gets angry enough to set something on fire, white men want to lecture them about peaceful protest.
She’s right, the social contract is broken. WE broke it. No shit people are this mad. Like she says, we’re lucky they want equality, not revenge.
ronJune 7, 2020 at 10:09 am #888088Of course the solution has to come from voting. We are not going to get where we want to be through violence. Being in my 70s, I lived the prelude to Richard Nixon. There were those who preached revolution as the answer. It was an abysmal failure as it had to be — the right has almost all the weapons, especially with Trump in charge of the state. Trump’s re-election will lead to very dark days.
And crying mansplaining is not an argument, it is an admission that one doesn’t have an argument. You are better than that.
