I think you should call her. She’s got to answer her phone right? Where I work you can choose to work remotely some days and you have to have your cell phone on you. Don’t show that you are frustrated when you do talk to her. If she’s not answering her phone then go by her office multiple times a day till you do catch her. How frustrating!
TheHizzyJanuary 31, 2018 at 12:55 pm #737356I had vacation request “denied” once for one day off for no other reason than my former boss telling me “They’re going to think you take too much time off.”
Look man – I just don’t want to have to answer my phone on one day….on my brothers wedding. Took all my vacation time a few months after and the peaced outta there fast. I had been a loyal employee for 6 years by then too! Even relocated with them several times.
I know you’re looking to move to be with BF soon, is a new job out of the question? Is your contract pretty binding? And I’ve never heard of anyone being capped at a week. We had a lady take 3 weeks and it took a lot of coordination, but she eared the PTO. How’s your private consulting going? Taking off enough you can just tell this company BYE FELICIA!
I’m sorry. I know how much it stinks to have plans ruined like that. I’m sure you guys will figure something out in return. But it’s completely frustrating. I’m sorry.
@TheHizzy yeah, it’s really hard.
This morning my manager asked to speak to me privately and she told me the good news that we just won a HUGE account, and specifically told me that the directors of this company chose our firm because they were impressed by my strategy. And she congratulated me on “steering the ship” with this proposal.
So, I feel like that’s an even bigger let down. We just won a big account and everyone is congratulating me and saying it’s because of me. That feels great of course, but my reward is to have my vacation denied. Greeeaaat. If that’s what I get for working hard, I have zero interest in being a leader or climbing the corporate ladder.
Anyway, as for my personal stuff, I’m not making money yet. I haven’t even started building my product yet. The last few months have been dedicated to setting up my website, getting my basic design done and writing my core lead magnets. This month I finally started my first list building campaign. I plan to start creating my course in February and hope to launch it in June. Also hoping to give my notice here in July (fingers crossed).
I need to enrol 25 students to not go broke (i.e. break even), anything above that will be a little bit of extra income to continue investing in marketing and help me make ends meet once I move to the UK (I’m obviously planning to have at LEAST 3 months salary saved up before I quit).
I’m hoping my BF will be able to come to Canada over Easter, and as soon as I get confirmation from him that he doesn’t have any conferences or work trips planned I’ll request a week off in May.
TheHizzyJanuary 31, 2018 at 2:11 pm #737375@MissD Again I’m sorry. It super sucks that you won’t get to see him for a while. I’m thankful our distance wasn’t a different continent! I’m rooting for you and all!
We got the venue under contract as soon as I mail that in for 2018 prices in 2019. We’re at a standstill until family comes down in April to do some dress shopping for bridesmaids. 🙂
BakerBabeFebruary 6, 2018 at 3:26 pm #738090I’m a little late on this and it looks like your request was denied (?) is there any way you can compromise with your company on this? Like take two weeks off instead of 3? I’m sorry either way – that is pretty crappy especially when they have recognized you as being a huge part of this account.
February 6, 2018 at 3:31 pm #738091@MissD How you are going to remain in the UK? When you enter they give you six months to stay and then you must leave unless you have a work visa. You probably already have that worked out but just in case I thought I would mention it.
Have you looked at expenses in the UK. It tends to be more expensive than here but you may live in a much more expensive area than I do. I’d try to always keep enough in reserve to buy a ticket home if worst comes to worst. Hopefully it all works out. I have no doubt that international marriages can work. I’m in one and I love it but I also think you need to always be able to leave if it turns out that the two of you aren’t a good match.
@Skyblossom we know the visa rules and all of that, and we’ve got it all worked out 🙂
So now I’m getting pushback on the number of days I requested. The controller was like sorry, you’ve requested more days than you’re allowed, you can’t take them.
And I fucking FLIPPED OUT because I specifically negotiated 22 personal days per year when I accepted this position, and he’s saying I only have 10.
So I just forwarded him all of my negotiation correspondence with the directors and I have it in writing that I have 22 days to use at my discretion. There’s no way they can come back and say I’m not allowed to take my time off… I will punch a goddamn hole in the wall.
WHY I am facing such roadblocks just to take my fucking vacation time that’s owed to me???? ARGH!!!!!!
Even if you did only have 10 days, why would 5 be too many to request?
I’m thinking something is going on, like they may be trying to send you a message that they think you’ve taken too much time off. This is weird. Are other people aware of the “policy” that no one can take vacation days in March or April, or more than a week at a time?
I’ve only taken 3 days off since I started this job 9 months ago!
When I went to Scotland last September, I worked remotely the whole time. Full days, and covered all my usual tasks.
I took 3 days off last November for my trip to London.
I have never called in sick.
I even asked in person back in December if this would be an acceptable request. There’s four month’s notice! And I offered to work remotely for most of that time, so I wasn’t even asking to be unplugged completely. And I was told to discuss with my direct colleague how we would divide our duties and then submit my request.
So I did, and as you know, I was ignored for a month.
No, there has been no announcement that people aren’t allowed to take time off in March or April. As far as I know, I’m the only one who has been told this. In fact, several people have taken time off at the beginning of March (I requested the end of March so there was no overlap). One of my colleagues is going to Hong Kong for two weeks. But they told me “you’ll notice that some other people have time off scheduled but that’s because they requested it way in advance.”
WELL I TRIED TO REQUEST 4 MONTHS IN ADVANCE!!
Anyway, I submitted my request for May as I was told, and now they’re saying I don’t have that many vacation days. But I have it all in writing, so how can they say no??
I’m so frustrated, because they keep telling me how important I am and blah blah blah. Lately they’ve been bringing me to like every single client meeting and asking me to speak about strategy (even though my job is not supposed to be client facing). I literally have 5 client meetings this week that they’ve asked me to speak at.
