Fyodor, I read that news about the FDA meeting yesterday too and got hopeful! I will be sooo relieved if kids 5-11 can get their shots by the end of the month. I am a little concerned that the dose – 1/3 what is given to 12+ – won’t be enough for Jackson, who is turning 10 in a few days but the avg size of a 13-year-old. I hope his pediatrician can address my concerns when we talk.
I am eligible for a booster but haven’t gotten it yet. I was convinced some higher risk folks in my life needed them and I convinced them to get theirs even before they weren’t yet technically eligible – bc as others have said, anyone can just go get one – but I’m not convinced I need it so I haven’t yet…

Good luck on date 4, cleopatra!
September 13, 2021 at 12:15 pm #1097533Yeah, I’m not sur4e about that 1 in 5000 rate either. I am not friends with 5000 people and I know of a handful of people in my social circle who have had breakthrough cases.
September 11, 2021 at 11:12 am #1097472My kids started school this week and it’s been exactly the nightmare I feared it would be. The crowd of ppl at drop-off and pick-up, the crowded, windowless room the kids – 200 or so – sit in as they wait to be picked up, the indoor maskless lunches, crowded classrooms with no distance between desks (like, they’re literally pushed together in clusters of three) – my anxiety is through the roof. Joanie had 33 kids in her class and the school doesn’t even test them for covid Bc “testing takes too much of a toll on kindergarteners and first graders.” Aka: tests are expensive and let’s cut corners by not testing the youngest. Vaccinations for the under 13 set cannot come quickly enough!!
August 25, 2021 at 6:30 am #1096972Leslie, I do feel better that all school staff in NYC will will be mandated to be vaccinated, but think that should have happened weeks ago to ensure full vaccination by the first day of school. Luckily, my kids’ new school, a charter school, did mandate vaccines weeks ago so we’ll be good there. We had a zoom meeting with admins yesterday and learned about more safety protocols and I didn’t get all my wish list but there will be a few mitigations that I know are importation. Still, with indoor lunches and high-quality masks not provided to students, I expect my kids will likely get covid before they’re vaccinated. Have to just hope it’s mild and there aren’t longterm effects.
August 24, 2021 at 3:40 pm #1096962I agree with Fyodor, and I’m sorry that happened to you. I thought it was pretty bad when the receptionists at my dermatologist’s office had their masks pulled down over their chins and half the people in the waiting room weren’t wearing one. In a doctor’s office! I couldn’t believe it.
At least the hygienist is vaccinated, and I think she would have told you if she weren’t. But I would not hesitate to make a complaint and to ask next time that you see someone different.
August 18, 2021 at 7:35 am #1096734Anonymous, so sorry about the shingles again! How awful! Now you’ve inspired me to do what I can to get the vaccine, even if it means paying out of pocket (which I think it does if you’re under 50 and why I hadn’t pursued this before. I thought having had it already, I might not be at such risk for getting it again before getting vaccinated).I hope you recover quickly!
Copa, if it makes you feel any better at all, I have two friends who recently – in the last two weeks – had family they live with have covid and neither got it from them. One friend’s son and husband both got covid (breakthrough case for the husband. they think the son, too young for vaccination, brought it home from camp. Husband is a recent cancer survivor so may have more compromised immunity). My friend slept in a separate room, used a separate bathroom, everyone wore masks like you guys are doing and she managed to avoid getting it. My other friend’s daughter got covid at camp and no one else in the family got it from her, despite doing no distancing or masks at home. Even the brother who is unvaccinated managed to continue testing negative, which makes me think he must have had an asymptomatic case at some point and has some antibodies. Anyway, wishing you continued good health and hope your bf recovers soon!
I had a basal cell tumor removed yesterday and it was… unpleasant, but at least it’s done. It was on my forehead and the dr had to pull the skin really tightly to suture and now I have a terrible tension headache, which he said may last for a few days. There were four other patients in the waiting room all there for the same procedure and I was the. youngest by about 30 years (44 is pretty young to have skin cancer already). None of these oldies were wearing masks, despite signs saying they were required. I guess if you’ve got your protection and don’t have unvaccinated kids at home to worry about, who cares? Pissed me off.
August 17, 2021 at 6:22 am #1096702Sorry to hear that, copa! Hope it’s a quick recovery and that you stay negative. Keep us posted.
August 16, 2021 at 12:40 pm #1096683I agree with Kate, and I’m sorry it’s like that. Totally sucks. People have been brainwashed and it’s depressing when it’s someone who has been important to you.
August 16, 2021 at 11:58 am #1096680They’re $24 for a box of two, super easy to use, and results in 15 minutes. We got a bu ch and plan to alternate doing weekly tests in our family.
August 16, 2021 at 10:59 am #1096675Breakthrough cases are not rare, and I agree with Fyodor that it’s been incredibly irresponsible for the CDC to message that they are. Maybe if they were honest with us, you wouldn’t have fully vaxxed parents of unvaxxed, unprotected kids doing indoor shows for unmasked audiences in freaking Louisiana, which has the highest covid transmission on the planet, my god. LadyE, how is your friend’s children?
August 10, 2021 at 6:41 pm #1096516My close friend’s kids were exposed to a positive covid case at camp last week (here in Brooklyn). They don’t have symptoms but she took them to get tested yesterday morning anyway. Results came back: one is positive, one is not positive yet. She got some at-home tests and will test everyone in the family in a couple days. Totally sucks.
