I’m currently reading the following resources in an effort to figure out what the heck they’re going to do
Also have posed these questions that we need to address
*Guest policy (overnights etc-should suspend).
*Entry into the house of non-residents (masks required, temp checks, hand washing, social distancing, limited access for ‘need only’)
*Mealtimes – will they be communal or boxed?–handwashing stations
*Will you require ladies to mask outside their bedrooms? (I could see this going either way, if you’re able to reduce the traffic in and out of the house, then only those who are feeling ill for whatever reason like allergies or something should mask)
*ceremonies and events? – Mask up and distance. limited attendance
*Recruitment? Virtual or outdoor activities planned? Will need to respect maximum group sizes, so perhaps more of a speed dating or small group/virtual extended rush should be considered
*nearest free testing facility and notification to school/house of need to quarantine/contact tracingIt’s going to be a very large pod (i’m guessing 30 considering reduced enrollment). I’ll have to talk to the lawyer about getting them all to sign off on the contact tracing app on their phones (as in requiring it to be turned on).
@PTL- do you have any resources you’re using? We do not have a national to assist (one of the oldest local in the nation)July 28, 2020 at 3:19 pm #909833@Part-time Lurker: it’s very difficult to balance for sure. I hadn’t even thought of what they were going to do until the contract discussions came up this week. I had already planned on the Alumnae meetings and reunions to be virtual or postponed, but holy crap… all this on top of the usual safety stuff we contend with (sexual harassment, stalking, violence, alcohol/drugs, etc). Are you the Resident Advisor/house parent? I live two stops north of the house now so as alum pres I can quickly get to them if needed. And thank you, you as well. It’s very rewarding to work with college students but not exactly glamorous. I have no idea how rush will look this year, virtual? Suspended? We wouldn’t be moving any *new* people into the house at this point, just all returnees. Our big discussion was that the schools current quarantine plan includes housing at a hotel (which is great), but the food service is driven to the students by the RA’s (they get paid for it). Our RA works differently and cars are not an automatic thing, so we’re asking the school to have their RA’s or public safety deliver supplies/food from our kitchen (packed up by our chef). At least it isn’t costing them any extra to quarantine.. it’s the schools obligation. they’re all supposed to quarantine or isolate and get tested before coming back to school, but I haven’t heard who is providing these tests? so many questions still.
I need to read through the state and CDC’s guidelines for dorm living so I can answer their questions better. I’m (not surprised) they haven’t gotten much help from Res Life.July 28, 2020 at 12:57 pm #909629ouch, well that’s going to send a bunch of kids to community colleges to take credits in the meantime..
July 28, 2020 at 11:32 am #909506My intern was cancelled for the summer 🙁 which, would have needed to be in person and that just wouldn’t have been fair to her or the rest of the team that needed to go in.
I’m trying to think of some good that comes from this..maybe that higher education prices go down? Probably not though. Will employers look unfavorably at this batch of graduates since their experience will be limited or different?
I’m Hoping for further good news on round three of this vaccine trial and more info on targeted treatments.July 28, 2020 at 9:45 am #909392It’s an engineering and architecture school so some amount of in person learning is necessary. I’m sure enrollment will be a mix of down and deferred, but many of the students do not have the privilege of being ‘sent’.. they are first generation college students or low income and on scholarship or older and pursuing these degrees. We have had women (less than 10) living in the house all summer as well as this is their permanent residence. I’m not arguing that this isn’t serious, it definitely is, just giving some insight into what some of the circumstances are.
July 28, 2020 at 8:58 am #909333Since my daughter is just daycare age, we don’t have to make the decision of school or no school at this point.
However, I was on the sorority’s housing contract call yesterday and that is just going to be very interesting. The school owns the houses at our campus and while the management and food service are run by the women, the room fees and maintenance are paid to the school. However, they’ve had no luck (as per usual) getting some of their requests met. If they’re paying to live in a special function ‘dorm’ essentially, then the school is obligated to provide the same level of service. All theyre asking for right now is that facility workers wear masks when entering the house (DUH!), hand sanitizer stations, additional cleaning materials and inclusion and consideration in the schools quarantine policy (which shouldn’t be a fight, we just need to have it clearly spelled out).
It was just making me think about how different college will be. Boyfriends/girlfriends if allowed over will need to wear masks at all times outside their girlfriend’s room.. we do have a few double occupancy so if one gets sick they both go into quarantine at a local hotel.. our chef will need to be masked.. etc.
It was pleasant to see the young ladies very proactive about all this and honestly just.. balanced. It gave me hopeJuly 22, 2020 at 2:48 pm #903330@OUG.. yeah. I feel ya. 100%. I had to warn my folks that come late November, when this next grandchild is born… to start seriously thinking about the flu shot and reducing their risks if they wanna see the baby and be helpful at all. It’s not them i’m worried about. its the baby. Not. f*cking. fair. to these babies.
July 20, 2020 at 9:31 am #902260You can already see the change in Chicago downtown from the lack of jobs, structure etc. It starts with small things (not planting flowers nor upkeep of the parks because of the budget..), now, with everything closed by 11 or 12, it becomes kind of a ghost town. So, my husband and I walked home (about 1.25 miles) from dinner/show on Friday evening. Normally, 11 pm would be no problem with plenty of people milling about. This time, nada. Just a few people scurrying, a few parties, and some homeless. Definitely did not feel the usual safe in numbers. And then the next night two people were shot and killed on the same path we took.. We are seeing a lot more gun violence in the downtown area (and not necessarily targeted gang members). Lots of trash everywhere, broken glass, boarded up buildings and places not reopening. I hope this is temporary and in a few years things look better, but people need hope and jobs and security for that
July 11, 2020 at 2:46 pm #895480I’ve heard good things about Spa Soak.
Called up Massage Envy: mask required during massage (I assumed).
Facial: the esthetician will have mask and face shield since I can’t wear anything during treatement.Originally there was 30 minutes between my appointment and I would have needed to leave potentially, but they were able to bump them up so they’re back to back. I don’t need to leave the room.
July 10, 2020 at 5:12 pm #894695It’s just at massage Envy (i have a monthly package), so I’m not sure what it’s like at the actual spas? i do know that a lot of places now won’t let you linger at all, you’re just in and out. Kinda defeats the “spa” experience, but at least treatments are still options.
July 10, 2020 at 4:10 pm #894650Wendy.. gah, that’s really really crappy. It’s not like you’re asking the universe for a lot.
