Drinking with Dear Wendy: Bourbon and Ginger
I’m taking a break from drinking until the end of the month, but I made this video a couple weeks ago when I was still over-indulging. It’s based on a drink I discovered at my friend’s wedding in June and subsequently enjoyed most for the summer. I’ve since added bubbly and apple cider to make it a fun larger scale harvest punch, but I will have to share that recipe with you another time. For now, this super simple bourbon and ginger could not be easier to make and it goes down dangerously well. I love it as a transitional summer-to-fall cocktail, and I hope you will, too!
Bourbon and Ginger
3 parts bourbon (I like Bulliet)
2 parts ginger ale (I like Fever Tree)
a couple of maraschino cherries (Jack Rudy bourbon cherries would be great, or Luxardo – which is the name I’m trying to think of in the video – would also work)
Fill a glass three quarters with ice, add the ingredients, stir, and enjoy!
I decided to make this a mostly-Sober September,, and I think I have actually had a more enjoyable month so far than usual…even given the added stress of sending a child back to school and making room in my schedule for some extra family time with my brother visiting from out of town.
It’s been eight days for me without a drink and while there have been moments I really wanted one, it’s mostly been fine, and there have even been some unexpected delights in being temporarily sober. a friend wanted to take me out for a belated bday drink and when I said I wasn’t drinking at the moment, we saw a 1951 french movie at a new movie theater near us, which was fun. This week I’m going to a fundraiser for a political organization where there will be wine (plus lots of people I don’t know, which usually makes me want the social lubrication of a drink) and I think that will be hard – so far, it’s been easy to avoid being tempted by staying away from alcohol. But I can do it.
Make this all the time, but with ginger beer. Yum!
Yes, I loved bourbon with spicy ginger beer. Mmmm. When you’re coming down with a cold, it almost feels like medicine in the best possible way.
When I’m coming down with a cold, I have no qualms about ordering a hot toddy while out and about.
I mostly mix ginger beer with rum, I should mix with bourbon more.
I love hot toddies! I don’t drink much liquor these days, but I love rum with ginger beer, too. My grandpa grew up in Haiti and he’s still a big fan of Barbancourt. It’s kind of a nice smoky rum.
Ooh, I like smokey liquors. I’ll have to look for that.
