Oh, also meant to mention on this thread. A friend of mine sent me the link to a local news article she’d commented on about vaccines for kids under 12. She essentially wrote that she was excited to get her girls, 4 and 8, vaccinated. The comments she received were either totally nutso, hateful, or both. Yikes.
Omfg that roach scenario is my nightmare. Idk if you get those long brown bugs with a lot of legs, but here in MA you get them coming out of the tub drain or sink. Any time I lived in a 1st-floor apt, or even a townhouse, I’d get them. Sometimes those shits are in the tub when you go to step in. Once there was one on my wall so big I couldn’t even deal and went next door to ask for help from my neighbor’s bf.
In that same place, a mouse was in my kitchen one winter. I’m very neat, it’s not like I was leaving food or trash around, he just came in I think because it was cold. I knew he was hanging out in the lower cupboards. That didn’t even faze me, I just got a little catch & release trap and caught him and took him to the park.
A rat in the house, though, fuck yes, I’d leave until the building super could show me the rat dead or in a cage.
Are you talking about house centipedes? If so, we get them in the Midwest as well, I think typically in fall and spring, and they can seem HUGE with how long their legs can get. They’re fast, too. Even if they’re not darting across a wall, their appearance still makes me jump every single time if they’re bigger.
Some of the spiders I’ve seen around here lately are quite large and bulbous but thankfully I only see those outside. I used to live about half a block from a bar/restaurant that had an awning at its entrance that I’d avoid in the fall on account of their spider situation.
LisforLeslieOctober 8, 2021 at 12:19 pm #1098859I had a mouse in my last apartment and did not take it well. That apartment was also infested with these little, non-biting bugs. I had to leave.
My place now, we only have those large roaches (aka waterbugs) but I see them VERY infrequently and 98% of the time, they are dead.
In the Florida house, newts get in all the time. Most of the time you just find a little dessicated husk (very sad) but if live, I will usually try to get them back outside. But they can be hard to pick up, tiny and fast. If they want to hang out… I’m cool with that.
One time in college, I saw one a house centipede as I was getting ready in the bathroom. I sprayed it with hairspray and made enough of a commotion that a roommate heard and came to check on me. She offered to dispose of it for me and I was like, great! By this point it had fallen from the wall to the floor, it was still alive but immobilized from the hairspray and she picked it up, popped its head with her fingers, and flushed it. She then told me she used to play with them as a kid. Gross. I mean, I wish I had that level of fearlessness around bugs, but I still remember the first time I became aware of those things and they’ve always scared me.
I’m TERRIFIED of spiders, bugs, worms, etc. Like you, @kate, I won’t get close enough to kill, or put something over them. Before the husband and I moved in together, I would Raid the shit out of all things creepy/crawly. Yes, I was probably also poisoning myself, but that’s truly the only way I could deal with them. TERRIFIED.
During high school, I worked at a car dealership. I would often help set up and take down the Christmas tree. One year, as I was taking down the ornaments, I saw hundreds of baby spiders crawling all over one side of the tree. I backed away. The office manager tried to tell me that they were just spiders and to please finish the task. I couldn’t. I was immobilized.
TheLadyEOctober 8, 2021 at 9:33 pm #1098867Oooh y’all, I live in NC and LET ME JUST TELL YOU about pests.
First of all, we have these ginormous water bugs/roaches that EVERYONE has and they’re EVERYWHERE. My house has been infested more than once. In 2019 they were coming up the pipes into the dishwasher. After my first little dog passed, I was in a fog of grief and picked up a load of towels on the floor to wash them and felt something skittering on my hand. YEP. They also laid little egg sacs in my (upstairs) bathroom that I had to yank off and flush. Now, I pay for an exterminator to come quarterly and spray for them, and he’ll come if I even see one outside of the quarterly visits.
However, right now what I’m most worried about is COPPERHEADS. Here in NC we apparently have the most copperheads of any state (no idea why they picked NC, we’re just lucky I guess). This is their babies hatching season and my Nextdoor is blowing TF up with sightings. People see 3, 4, 5 of them every night while walking their dogs. Many people and dogs have gotten bitten. Yesterday a man had one FALL FROM A TREE ONTO HIS HEAD. He thought it was a stick but WHEN HE KICKED IT, IT WAS SOFT. I almost passed out just reading that (and then I saw the picture, holy shit).
I’m terrified to take my two little dogs out at night (nighttime, dusk and right after, is when they are most active) and my anxiety is through the roof when I have to. Of course, my girls want to sniff everything and are super curious. Between the copperheads everywhere and now the news telling us we’ll be seeing more COYOTES in October and November, I just…I feel like I was in less danger from wildlife in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania where I grew up. And I saw a bear run through our yard one time there.
Oh, as far as rats – London has them in the tube and in the trash bins. I found it very ironic when I was going to fancy places like Harrod’s and Harvey Nichols and in the tube station for those streets there were rats running everywhere. Ugh.
KateOctober 9, 2021 at 5:39 am #1098873The coyote that was in our neighborhood for a while didn’t seem dangerous to us when we’d see her while walking the dog (JRT, pretty small). I do think they are a big threat to cats, sadly, though.
But one town over, a lady was walking her 60-lb pit bull, and a coyote CHASED them. She faced it and thought it backed off, but then no, it came at her again, and she ran and barely got into the T station. That was in the spring, when I guess coyotes see big dogs as a threat to their babies. The woman must have walked near pups by mistake.
Which reminds me of when a turkey came exploding out of a bush at me and my dog because her babies must have been under there. She wouldn’t stop flying at us and trying to peck us until somehow throwing the bag of poop in my hand bought us time to gtfo.
