Sooo here to report back on international travel, in case anyone was curious.
Our main destination was in south central Mexico and we barely managed to get there. There aren’t direct flights and we were supposed to connect in Dallas. But Dallas couldn’t deal with the snow/ice a couple weeks ago, so our flights were canceled two days in a row. We ended up canceling and rebooking using points on another airline through Houston. That leg of the trip was great. There were definitely other tourists, but they don’t go there en masse the way they do the coastal areas, and everyone was fantastic about COVID precautions.
On the way home, we did a quick stop in Playa del Carmen and omg just no. Not great. The last time I was in Playa del Carmen was like a decade ago and at the time was quieter — went with my mom and we literally had an entire pristine beach to ourselves. It’s changed a ton since then and just wasn’t for me. We stayed at an adults-only all-inclusive and maybe it was our hotel, IDK, but it was basically all the kinds of people I’ve been trying to avoid here. I am likely going back in a few months for a family get-together and hoping that the family member who is planning it, who lives in that area, picks a hotel/area that caters more to Mexican tourists or that is overall quieter. Because yikes. And the COVID test went deep enough to make my eyes water but was a fast, maybe five-second, one-nostril-only swab.
I felt embarrassed the entire time we were in Playa del Carmen. Like I just wanted to drink fruity cocktails, read my book in the sunshine, and relax. Which I was able to do, but with Pitbull playing in the background while Chad from Ohio did his best to win the push-up and belly flop contests. The boyfriend still has status with the hotel we were at from all the travel he used to do for work, so we were at least granted access to the quieter “honors member” areas of the beach and pool. I’d go back to Mexico in a second, just not the corners Americans feel most comfortable.
Yeah I think you can assume that Chads will be concentrated in Cancun/Riviera Maya and Puerto Vallarta. I know a HUGE moron who’s going to Puerto Vallarta.
Cabo seemed okay to me in December but who knows. Maybe just the time of year (it wasn’t Christmas week yet so it was slower).
February 14, 2022 at 5:58 pm #1102645I recently got progressives too. Ugh. I don’t think my overall eyesight changed that much. But going from watching TV to reading I had to move my reading object (book, phone, etc) away from me or just adjust spacing every time. It was annoying! These new glasses help with that. Though I don’t need them to read so if I’m reading in bed I just take them off.
We are traveling to Hawaii in June and I was waiting to see the new rules for travel there (they were thinking of making 3 shots mandatory for visiting) but they didn’t change it. I was actually kind of disappointed about that. But at least people who visit there have to be vaccinated or tested frequently (and I think if not vaccinated a quarantine period). Though that is not a guarantee of safety from COVID, it does make me feel a bit better about visiting there. And I need a vacation!
KateFebruary 16, 2022 at 12:50 pm #1102693Haha, so someone we know did test positive coming back from Cancun and had to stay in an isolation room for a couple of days until a negative test.
This guy is an asshole. He had a wife for 20+ years, two kids, and it sounded like their marriage wasn’t great. They were getting help. Then she got cancer, I think it was pancreatic. She passed away a year ago. This asshole IMMEDIATELY started a relationship with his old girlfriend (or maybe they were already involved, who knows), and is about to get married!!! Not only that, he left his kids and went to live with her in Europe. Yes, abandoned them after mom died. One of them is a TEEN. So he just brought his fiancée home to meet them and it didn’t go well, so the two of them jetted off to Cancun for 2 weeks. Dicks.
February 16, 2022 at 2:43 pm #1102696How awful! Those poor kids. They essentially don’t even have any parents anymore. I hope they have other family they can lean on when needed.
They want everyone to fly to Germany for the wedding.
Why get married?? It’s been one YEAR since your wife’s death. Sure, I guess date, have a discreet relationship if you must, but why tf do you need to get married? Seems so disrespectful, selfish, and not to mention neglecting the kids.
AllornoneFebruary 18, 2022 at 11:23 am #1102736My State (Florida- home to Trump-worshipping DeSantis) apparently has been experiencing declining COVID rates. While this is good, obviously, my city’s public school system is responding by easing mask mandates, now making mask-wearing optional to adults in school and administrative facilities. While I don’t work for the school system, my organization works with children and follows their protocols. So mask-wearing is now optional in my fully in-person job. We still get free weekly Covid tests, but we are no longer required to wear masks in public spaces. I ride mass transit and care for my elderly parents, so I’m keeping my mask on regardless and am confident most people in my office will too (my immediate boss, for instance, is immunocompromised, so he’s definitely going to be masked), but I hate that this is the response. Instead of keeping the policies that are working, we are abandoning them and potentially setting ourselves up for yet another big outbreak. This thing is never going to end because people suck.
I think there’s a nation-wide trend toward easing up on mask mandates. My state (Illinois) is planning to life its indoor mask mandate in many space by the end of the month and while the governor was trying to keep masks in school, the courts have so far overruled him. Last I read, Chicago, which is where I am, is still TBA on when our mask mandate will be lifted but I plan to continue to wearing mine.
